The Underlying Anatomy of Vitreous and Its Role in Retinal Disease
نویسندگان
چکیده
V itreous is a remarkable structure. It is 98% water, but owing to the 2% structural macromolecules, vitreous maintains an exquisite gel structure. Those structural macromolecules are hyaluronan, which is a glycosaminoglycan of repeating disaccharide units, and collagen. Because hyaluronan is very hydrophilic and absorbs water, where it goes, water follows. Hylauronan is also organized within an entangled network that creates viscoelasticity, an important biophysical property. Collagen is the “skeleton” of the vitreous body. The most prevalent subtype of collagen that comprises the human vitreous is type II. The only other place in the human body that type II collagen is found abundantly is the articular cartridge in the joints. In both the joints and vitreous, there are many simultaneous manifestations of inborn congenital errors. An organization of collagen and hyaluronan exists within the vitreous, so that the collagen fibrils are spread apart by the hyaluronan molecules, maximizing the number of photons that penetrate the vitreous and access the retina, where vision begins.1

Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...

Vitreous constitutes about 80% of the volume of the human eye. It is an extended extracellular matrix that is composed of collagen, hyaluronan, and other extracellular matrix molecules, but mostly water. In both health as well as disease, especially diabetic retinopathy (DR), special attention should be drawn to the posterior vitreous cortex and its relation to the retinal surface. The importan...

Prevention of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD) in susceptable eyes is necessary. In order to evaluate the role of signs and symptoms of the treated eyes in preventing RD, this study performed in prophylactically laser treated (PLT) eyes in Rasul-e Akram Hospital from 1991 to 1999. This is an exisiting data study from the records of the patients who underwent PLT around the retinal lesio...

A 44 year old woman presented with decreased vision and floaters, started since 4 days before, in her right eye referred to our ophthalmology clinic. On examination, it was found that the best corrected visual acuity was limited to R-E: 20/80 and that of the left eye: 20/20. Fundus examination of the right eye revealed a rhegmatogenous subclinical retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage 15 m...

Background: Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) are a group of genetic disorders with high degrees of clinical, genetic and allelic heterogeneity. IRDs generally show progressive retinal cell death resulting in gradual vision loss. IRDs constitute a broad spectrum of disorders including retinitis pigmentosa and Leber congenital amaurosis. In this study, we performed genotyping studies to identify...
